Why Does Charlotte Have So Many Bad Drivers and Traffic Accidents?

Just like any other big city, Charlotte, North Carolina has its share of bad drivers and traffic accidents. But as it turns out, we have more than our share! A recent study lists Charlotte as the 14th most dangerous city for bad drivers, from traffic violations like speeding to more serious infractions, like DWI and DUI.   According to Quote Wizard, who ranks the 75 most dangerous cities in the country for bad drivers, Charlotte is the worst city in North Carolina for bad driving.  No wonder traffic court is so busy!   So what is “bad driving?” The research from Quote Wizard used a range of criteria including:

  • Running a red light
  • Accidents
  • Speeding tickets
  • DUI/DWI
  • Citations for cell phone use, and other traffic violations

The bottom line is that we have a city full of drivers who can't keep their eyes on the road or obey traffic laws.   But why?   Does Charlotte have more speeding tickets and DWIs because we have such a large population? Other cities with larger populations don't have near the number of bad drivers as Charlotte. Could it be a large number of college-aged drivers talking and texting while driving? Is it the seemingly illogical layout of many of the roads and highways? Maybe it's the never-ending construction and rerouting that's to blame.   It's most likely a combination of all the factors above and others. Regardless of why we have so many bad drivers, the chances are good that eventually you or someone you know will get a traffic ticket or DWI.
