The 5 Most Dangerous Intersections in Charlotte: Part 1

Did you know that 40 percent of all vehicle accidents happen at intersections? DWI, speeding, and other reckless driving only add to the risks. Most of these wrecks involve left turns and rear-end collisions, often caused by distracted drivers. In Charlotte, North Carolina we have our share of dangerous intersections, and a recent report from the CDOT lists the top five.

  1. Harrisburg Road and Cambridge Commons Drive

The Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) has determined that Harrisburg Road and Cambridge Commons Drive is the most dangerous intersection in Charlotte. The continued commercial and residential growth in this area will certainly increase the number of commuters and other motorists, adding to the current dangers. To minimize the growing risks at the intersection, the city has recently installed a roundabout to decrease accidents from left-hand turns.

  1. East 4th Street and Kings Drive

Coming in at number two, East 4th and Kings is an area that has experienced decades of heavy traffic and an increasingly large number of pedestrians. From drivers failing to see pedestrians to the recent increase in cell phone usage while driving, the intersection has become a growing danger to pedestrians and motorists.

  1. 9th Street at North College

Just like 4th and Kings, this area has a large number of pedestrians that just aren't acknowledged by drivers. Many of the accidents that occur at this intersection involve drivers who simply weren't paying attention. Whether it's not seeing a turn signal or some other indicator from other drivers or not slowing down for crosswalks, the large amount of traffic and distracted drivers will continue to pose a risk.

  1. 8th Street at North College

Only a block or so away from 9th and North College, the number four pick suffers from the same heavy traffic, a large number of pedestrians, and distracted drivers as the other dangerous intersections.

  1. Interstate 277, 77 and 85

Not your typical inner-city intersection, the number five spot goes to the area where Interstates 277, 77, and 85  converge. Just like most other dangerous intersections, this area is plagued with drivers texting, talking, and other distractions that take their eyes off the road. Interstates are dangerous roads in their own right, but when you add the increased speeds and the maze of on and off-ramps, the dangers are significantly increased.
